Colour splash from the 80's

Research and Development for a project is always a relentless process. While most designers have a single mentor or a prevailing design style to draw inspiration, I on the other hand always like to whisk a new spirit into the space. One signature style has never been my cup of tea, I love drawing inspiration from the NOW.
The NOW is a potpourri of design timeline from the contemporary to the bohemian, the classic to the minimalistic or the art deco to the modern. To my surprise, they have always hit the retro wave.

As you browse across your Pinterest and Instagram in search of the latest inspiration, all that is evident, is Pop-art and graphic illustrations, on walls, pillow covers, coffee mugs, shoe boxes, fabrics, cars and on every god damn thing!!! Let me break your bubble, IT’s NOT REALLY NEW!

The credit goes to the Memphis group who revolutionized it way back in the 80's

The colours bold and bright were a breakthrough of the era, which emerged towards the fag end of the BoHo epoch taking  inspiration from the POP culture.
The Memphis group was founded by Ettore Sottsass in 1981; the group’s name derived by the Bob Dylan song "stuck inside the mobile with the Memphis blue again"
The style was interpreted as a
'shotgun wedding between the Bauhaus and fisher-price'.

Today when monotony hits our daily inspiration with neutral palettes and whitewashed walls, what brings in the fresh air is the dash of vibrant colours.

Today Artist like Camille Walala whose work is appreciated in all parts of the world, from London to Dubai and far beyond, is playing the retro.
The grid, the use of bold colours and the geometry in patterns are all moving in sync and at a fast pace.

Its captivating when a complete structure can carry the theme and when a designer is able to incorporate it in every element of design. That was brilliantly done by the creative agency Masquespacio at the Valencia Lounge Hostel, Spain
Designed by its Creative Director Ana Milena Hernandez Palacios, bold colours, geometric graphics, vibrant decor created a very lively space.

Each of its 11 rooms have different themes like surfing, music, and ethnic trends to fit different personalities. Much like today where every little corner of our life is customized.

Similarly working with patterns and colours designer Patricia Urquiola, stirs the Memphis enthusiasm in the interior spaces and furniture designed by her.  Her work although is on the progressive scale of the style from the 80's. It carries the playfulness, the minimalism and the cutting edge boldness.

The Verdict:

The Memphis design style - bold, vibrant, colourful

To me this is a Trend Alert I don't fancy to miss.
I hope to see it staying a little longer.
It's larger than life, it's crazy, it's fun, it's sure not for the faint hearted.
As long it has an element of you JUST DO IT.
I am eager to know what you think of this multi-colored palette. If you like the joie de vivre or you prefer the monotony . Do you think we will see this trend staying or will it wax and wane over time? Will it rewind after 30years or progress in a dynamic explosion? Do let me know your thoughts
